Zaya Samurai (Scabbard Samurai)

Hitoshi Matsumoto’s low-key samurai comedy manages to create something truly evocative and emotional resonant, even with kind of a harebrained plot. The performances in the film are subtle and effective, the story is conventional yet engrossing, and Matsumoto’s direction is remarkably restrained, making for a cinematic experience that leaves swelling with emotion even as the credits run.
