𝐃𝐔𝐌𝐀 (𝐍𝐲𝐞𝐠𝐞 𝐍𝐲𝐞𝐠𝐞 𝐓𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐬)
Martin Khanja (aka Lord Spike Heart) and Sam Karugu emerge from Nairobi’s flourishing underground metal scene as former members of the bands Lust of a Dying Breed and Seeds of Datura. Together in 2019 they formed Duma (Darkness in Kikuyu) with Sam abandoning bass for production and guitars and Lord Spike Heart providing extreme vocals to the project.
Recorded at Nyege Nyege Studios in Kampala over three months in mid 2019 their self-titled debut album fuses the frenetic euphoria, unrelenting physicality and rebellious attitude of hardcore punk and trash metal with bone-crunching breakcore and raw, nihilist industrial noise through a claustrophobic vortex of visceral screams.
The savant mix of brutally adrenalized drums, caustic industrial trap, shredding grindcore inspired guitars and abrupt speed changes create a darkly atmospheric menace and is lethal on tracks like the opener “Angels and Abysses” , “Omni” or “Uganda with Sam”
.The gruelling slow techno dirges and monolithic vocals on “Pembe 666” or “Sin Nature” add a pinch of dramatic inevitability bringing a new sense of theatricality and terrifying fate awaiting into the record’s progression.
A sinister sonic aggression of feral intensity with disregard for styles, Duma promises to impact the burgeoning African metal scene moving it into totally new, boundary-challenging experimental territories.

Tatiana Heuman aka QEEI works on music and sound creation between Argentina and Europe. She plays drums, likes loops, repetitions and surprises. Her approach to musical production was founded essentially in a collaborative, free, intuitive and experimental territory where genres and tags are fluid and in permanent mutation. With her solo electronic music project, Tatiana Heuman since 2014 comprises impulse, empowerment, chaos and sensitivity as elements that are deeply influenced by her musical upbringing as trumpet player and drummer with the free improvisation band Ricarda Cometa.
After two EPs released in 2014 and 2016, her first album ›QEEI‹ was out in August 2018 on the New Yorker label Astro Nautico. She has toured Europe, USA and Latin America playing in festivals such as Tauron Nowa Muzyka, CTM and Heroines of Sound. Understanding sounding and listening as a means of manifestation and empowerment, she develops music production and Deep Listening® laboratories and workshops.
She is part of the collectives #VIVAS (female* sounds archive) and TRRUENO both based in Buenos Aires, AR.

LINE UP:
KORA WINTER (Post-Hardcore/Metal)
After their widely acclaimed debut ‘BITTER,’ praised by critics and fans alike, KORA WINTER is back on stage in 2023 with new music. Hungrier, angrier, and more incisive than ever before, the Berlin-based band is ready this year to confront the German hardcore and metal scene with taboo topics such as identity, representation, and trauma. The five-member band, fronted by vocalist Hakan Halaç (also known for his solo project HAXAN), has already proven their live prowess with support shows for bands like The Hirsch Effekt, Rolo Tomassi, Evergreen Terrace, and Jinjer.

RIOT SPEARS (Grunge/Angry Pop)
The angry pop/grunge trio Riot Spears formed in early 2019 and has so far released the formidable mini EP “I am not an object, not yet a person” and in 2021 their first album BAD, which was very well received by the local music critics guild. Riot Spears have shared the stages of the world with Skating Polly and Akne Kid Joe, but they also like to play for a box of chocolates at your grandma’s birthday party. In their songs you can hear the raw and energetic sounds of the 90’s Seattle and Riot Grrrl scene as well as the vulnerable and dreamy side of melodic pop music. Mix the sound of teasing irony and plenty of angst and anger, plus freshly baked self-doubt and a pinch of pessimism and you’ll be standing in the mosh pit in front of the stage screaming your head off.

DEBMASTER (Electronica/Glitch/Bass-Break)
French, yet a “Berliner” for the past 12 years, Julien Deblois aka Debmaster, is the eclectic producer behind many of the exciting releases on Hakuna Kulala. While Debmaster had a lot of fun playing live with his noisy friends in Berlin (Jason Forrest, Patric Catani, Chris Imler & others “crazy people”). His 2015 encounter with the overactive Nyege Nyege scene was the perfect outlet when they invited him to send “some beats” for artists who were recording weekly in a DIY recording studio in Kampala. Mc Yallah and him started to work together around 2018 for the first EP Ndi Mukazi, quickly followed by Kubali. He now produces music every day, mainly for Hakuna Kulala and Mc Yallah. He is also behind releases of Ecko Bazz (Mmaso), Biga yut (Walah), Will’stone (Mbv5) and more to come…

R.S.S (dnb/Crossbreed/Hardcore/Breakcore)

Exhibition with Gil Kuno and panke.gallery sound night with Wiggle
The work of Gil Kuno is an intricate tapestry of sound art, installations, and video art. For this solo exhibition at panke.gallery, we aim to exhibit his earliest art creations – those created on the Internet in the 90s. 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the first of these creations, Unsound.
“Unsound.com” (1994) was a pioneering media experiment that fused sight and sound, allowing users to interactively engage with artists’ works in both visual and audio formats. Through crowd-sourcing, it facilitated artistic curation by audience votes – an innovation that even captured the admiration of Timothy Leary, who subsequently endorsed the site.
In 1996, Gil Kuno introduced Wiggle, the world’s first Internet band. This groundbreaking endeavour leveraged the Internet’s connectivity to forge musical collaborations across geographical boundaries, culminating in a band composed of members from Japan, Australia, and the United States. They achieved a major label deal and released multiple albums, all while some band members remained faceless due to the geographically dispersed nature.
