Bullerengue, one of Colombia’s most powerful Afro-Colombian rhythms, returns to Berlin for one night only, this time in the voices of the women who carry it forward. Bulla de Matronas (@bulladematronas) is a touring project led by a collective of diverse women from the Colombian Caribbean who sing and dance bullerengue, inheriting the songs, rhythms and knowledge of the tradition’s original guardians. Their show pays tribute to the great matrons of the genre, such as Etelvina Maldonado, Eustiquia Amaranto “La Justa” and Petrona Martínez: live percussion, call-and-response singing, improvised ancestral dance, and the rueda, a collective circle where everyone joins in. With Chiro CH, La Poderosa, Arlenis, Rosa, Tati and Nerek. A live bullerengue concert, not a cover, not a fusion, the tradition itself, unfiltered.
When the last drum fades, El Vacile takes over the dancefloor:
